The parents of deceased golden retrievers Rosa and Diego are pictured on a boat in Mexico, where they were bred. While Rosa and Diego's owner, Brian Jones, knows they can't be replaced, he will be bringing Diego's sister, Maria, to Oro-Medonte from Mexico next month to live with him and his wife on their farm. The community rallied to search for two missing Oro-Medonte golden retrievers, but it has come to a tragic end.
The bodies of 22-month-old Rosa and nine-month-old Diego were found Tuesday in the two-acre pond on their Line 9 North farm, owner Brian Jones confirmed to The Packet & Times Thursday afternoon.
It's the best of the worst," he said of the situation.
Rosa and Diego were together at home and they were probably playing. Jones suspected one of them went into the freezing water and the other thought it was safe and followed.
"That's how goldens are when they're young," he said.
Both dogs will be cremated and buried on the property when the ground thaws.
Since Jones reported the pair missing March 1, his phone has been ringing off the hook and his email inbox flooded.
"There's just so many really great people out there that came to assist in trying to bring them back home safely," said Jones, who was genuinely touched by the outpouring of support.
"People who I didn't even know came forward and said, 'Here are my thoughts. Hopefully, they help you with the healing process.' You would have thought that they were your two children."
When he notified the police of his dogs' disappearance, he was told they were likely stolen.
"They always stayed in our front yard. Typically, goldens do not wander," he said.
"We just thought that somebody would have gone by and said, 'Hey, two nice dogs.'"
Rosa and Diego were half brother & sister (same mother). They were bred and purchased for $1,500 each in Baja, Mexico, where Jones and his wife, Jill, have been spending the winter for the past 20 years.
"They just love you unconditionally," he said of golden retrievers. "And, as a result, they become family members."
Jones spent upwards of $5,000 trying to find Rosa and Diego. He put up posters and hired a Canadian dog whisperer and mentalist from the United States. While the dog whisperer told him his dogs were still alive and had been taken by thieves looking for a cash reward - he was offering $1,000 for their safe return, no questions asked - he has no animosity toward her.
She was integral in the search, Jones said, noting although she "missed the mark," she was "very comforting."
In addition to friends and family, Ducks Unlimited and the Golden Rescue service in Barrie were also of great assistance, he said, noting a fund will be set up with Golden Rescue in Diego and Rosa's name.
While there will never be a replacement for either dog, Jones will be bringing Diego's sister, Maria, up from Mexico next month to join his 12-year-old yellow lab, Sam, and two cats, Panther and Pete, on the farm. "Maria will be part of the healing," he said.

Below are some of the links associated with newspaper articles and Facebook posting during the past 10 days. My heart and sincere thanks go to Brian, Jill & everyone that contributed to everything about Rosa & Diego. They will be joining the original Fish Dogs, Hercules, Skylor, Seaver & uncle Simon as well as the unexpected loss of Diego's sister, Nalita (9 months old) also just a couple days later, March 8th, due to an apparent heart attack? She had zero symptoms what so ever of any problem(s) and in the morning was perfectly fine, it appeared? No foul played seemed related.

Also, our hearts and prayers go to Juan Jose & his wife with regards to their loss of Nalita, on March 8th, 2013. Pepi, their male golden retriever, has lost his play & soul mate. This week in March has been brutal to our "families"!
